'Bluestone' Olivine Dolerite, Lincolnshire.



A Lincolnshire speciality. Found as glacial erratics in the Lincolnshire Wolds (chalk) there ‘Bluestones’ stand out as markers of the ice age. There is an ancient road crossing the Wolds known as the ‘Bluestone Heath Road’ which takes its name from these. No rock of igneous nature occurs for hundreds of miles, the most likely source is the Great Whin Sill. An Olivine dolerite with subordinate augite, sharp plagioclase laths, reasonably large crystals
