Aegirine-Augite in a leucite tephrite from Vesuvius. The pyroxenes show zoned growth with more iron in outer zones. Pleochroism is weak, but visible.

Largest dimension of left crystal: 6mm.

Aegirine-Augite in a leucite tephrite from Vesuvius. Blue phenocryst has well developed oscillatory growth zoning with some zones showing inclusions. Both crystals show sector zoning. The well developed crystal shape indicates that the aegirine augite was the first mineral to form.

Largest dimension of left crystal: 6mm.

Augite in a gabbro from Ardnamurchan. In this instance the augite was the one of the last minerals fo crystallise from the magma and occupies the spaces between the preexisting plagioclase laths. The plagioclase laths appear to penetrate the augite. This is subophitic texture. (ophitic if laths are fully enclosed)

Length of central crystal: 3mm
